Bringing Dogs and Cats into Anguilla

(Including simply passing through Sint Maarten on the way to Anguilla)

This is a temporary page. The content will be moved into our Adopting a Pet — the Basics page when we feel the process has solidified.

St. Maarten is implementing new pet importation regulations. A microchip will be needed to bring a pet into Anguilla via St. Maarten.

St. Maarten is implementing new pet importation regulations. In fact, we have heard they will begin enforcement of their new rules in the near future. We will have updates as needed and are still trying to get the full details. But, what we have heard is that you will need:

  • A granted permission form from Sint Maarten. It must be emailed in. Important: this form details many different vaccinations, tests and other requirements that have to be certified by your North America vet (mostly on the NA health certificate)
  • A microchip (ISO preferred)
  • A Health Certificate filled out to convey compliance with the Sint Maarten requirements
  • (If coming to Anguilla) a granted permission form from the Anguilla Government (Department of Agriculture)
  • A rabies certificate if applicable

The Sint Maarten permission form, microchip requirement and expanded North American Health Certificate are new requirements.

St. Maarten Permission Form

You will need a permission form from Sint Maarten (this in addition to the one Anguilla requires). To get the permission form, go to this page:

https://sxmvetclinic.com/site/view/173804_ExportingImporting.pml

Download the "Application for importing animals into St. Maarten" document, fill it out and then contact the Inspection Department by email (the address is on the above page).

Include your Anguilla Permission form along with the filled out St. Maarten application; this should smooth the way for Sint Maarten to grant the permission.

About Microchips

If you are traveling with your pet to Anguilla via St. Maarten, it is highly desired that your pet have an ISO compatible microchip. The ISO version is what the European Union (EU) supports.

However, the USA and Canada appear to use a different type of chip.

Most US vets for example, use the non–ISO variant, so talk to your vet about getting an ISO chip. We think that an ISO chip is important since both Saint Martin and Sint Maarten are affiliated with the EU and the EU requires the ISO version.

Plus, if there ever is an emergency situation where you need to rush your pet to either the French or Dutch side, having an ISO chip will just make things go more smoothly.

IMPORTANT: The microchip information (including the number) needs to be included on the pet’s health certificate. Follow the directions in the St. Maarten

We do not know what will happen for those not in compliance with these new rules, but your travel could be halted until your pet gets the right chip and paperwork. We just do not know at this point.

Leaving Anguilla with your pet through Sint Maarten

If you are already in Anguilla and plan to travel with your pet to or through St. Maarten, our vet in Anguilla can help you with the microchip and the process.
